2003 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty handling, miserly fuel economy. introductionhonda civic is an icon. Honda sells more than 325,000 civics a year in the u. S., making it one of america's best-selling compacts. Refinements for 2002 included improved handling and reduced noise and vibration, though we think there is still room for improvement in that area.  for 2003, sedans and coupes come with improved seat fabrics and the outboard rear headrests are now adjustable. Civic lx and hx models now come with a standard cd player, and the driver's seat on the lx is now height-adjustable, as it has been on the ex. Lx adds air conditioning, power-operated controls and luxury features.  ex models get a 127-horsepower engine, body-colored power mirrors, a remote entry system, and a tilt-and-slide glass sunroof. The ex engine displaces the same 1. 7 liters as the dx and lx engine, but gets a boost from honda's excellent vtec (variable valve timing and electronic control) system. Civic si comes with a high-output 2. 0-liter i-vtec (for variable valve timing with intelligence) engine rated 160 horsepower. Si comes with a five-speed manual and is not available with an automatic transmission.  prices range from about $13,000 for a dx to about $15,000 for an lx to about $17,000 for an ex to about $19,000 for the si.  specialty civics are available as well. Coupe hx 14,170) comes with a fuel-efficient lean-burn engine teamed to the standard five-speed manual transmission. Capable of 44 mpg, it achieves an impressive 117 horsepower. Optional on hx is a continuously variable automatic transmission, or cvt, for $1,000. There's also a coupe gx with a natural gas-powered engine that honda claims is the cleanest internal combustion engine in the world. A civic hybrid is available that uses a small gas engine and a big electric motor to achieve 50 mpg, which new car test drive reviewed separately. We think hybrids are the best short-term solution to reducing air pollution and fuel consumption, and the civic hybrid is the best example of one of these.  options are limited for the many trim levels. Side-impact air bags add $250. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on ex and si, optional on gx. walkaroundthe honda civic sedan and coupe are conservative in appearance, but contemporary in design. They present a wedge-shaped profile with a high, curt tail and low, abbreviated prow. The hood sits an amazing 2. 6 inches lower than the hood of the previous-generation civic.  the front is clean and conservative with a discreet horizontal grille set between large, triangular multi-lens headlamps that curve around the corners. A wide air intake stretches across the body-colored bumper, and a low front spoiler has been added for downforce. Relatively flat flanks are interrupted only by the moldings. Windshield pillars arch into the rolled roof to meet the narrow c-pillars. Bold tail lamps dominate the blunt rear panel, underscored by a body-colored bumper. The sedan's tail lamps have been revised for 2003.  they look like they're from the same family, but the sedan and coupe differ in appearance. The coupe features a more aggressive windshield rake for a sportier look, and its tail lamps light up in a signature pattern. The sedan and coupe do share the same wheelbase and structure.  the styling of the honda civic si hatchback seems to polarize people. Some think it's ugly; others love it and are quick to defend it. It's edgy and wedgy. The huge, flat windshield is steeply raked. The nose slopes radically downward, giving the car excellent aerodynamics and driver visibility. Its unique mesh grille is framed by huge triangular headlamps. The si is slab-sided, without any sculpture in the sheet metal. Also, the wheels and tires do not look big enough for the bodywork. The si features a subtle roof spoiler, a dual tipped exhaust, and comes standard with a moonroof.  honda is known for its space-efficient design, and the civic packs its engine into a condensed engine bay, leaving more space for the interior. From the driver's seat, the honda civic is a comfortable car. From the back seat, it is less so. As in most hondas, the passenger compartment feels airy and open.  front-seat accommodations in the civic are superb. The sedan's front seats provide excellent support, thanks to a rigid structure with aggressive side bolsters. High seat cushions make entry and exit easy. Seat fabrics have been upgraded in the sedan for 2003. The quality of the interior materials and trim is excellent and the interior design is ergonomically superb. Visibility when driving or parking is excellent as the driver is surrounded by glass and looks over a very low hood line.  the coupe's front seatbacks stretch broad and deep, and the headrests are open at the center like a doughnut. Front seatbelts attach to a side anchor bar that slides out of the way when someone climbs into the back seat.  the si front seats are excellent, comfortable for long drives, and supportive for hard driving. They look and feel upscale. Alcantara-like trim adds richness to the side bolsters while red stitching accents the sporty fabric in the middle. The seating position in the si is a bit strange with its big dash and sharply raked windshield, and reminds us of the volkswagen new beetle.  rear-seat accommodations are not the best. They are neither roomy nor comfortable by class standards. The toyota corolla is better on this score. The flat floor lets rear-seat passengers spread their feet out; there's no center tunnel to get in the way of the center occupant. But three in back is still a crowd. The rear bench is low and hard and does not support the thighs well. The coupe's front seats cooperate for rear entry by sliding forward under power when the seatback tilts forward; a memory function then returns it to its original position. Bottom line: the civic is happiest with two people, but can haul additional passengers when called upon.  in all civics, the cockpit looks clean and efficient, with the instrument panel tucked beneath a barrel-shaped cowl. Round white-on-black analog instruments include an oversized speedometer and tachometer in the center, flanked by smaller fuel and coolant gauges. In the coupe, gauges show silver highlights and glow with amber light at night. The si features black numbers on white gauges, for a sporty appearance; while a bright red si badge adds color.  hvac controls are wonderfully designed, with large rotary dials for heating, ventilation, and fan speed stacked just to the left of the audio system controls. Separate buttons for air conditioning, recirculation, and rear-window defrost are arrayed just below the audio system. It's a clean design that's very easy to operate. Audio controls are close at hand, but the system suffers from small buttons and knobs. Worse, the sound was only mediocre.  the si sports a shifter that sprouts at an angle from the upper console, as in a mid-1960s alfa romeo or some of the latest rally cars. Though it looks odd at first, the lever turns out to be perfectly located for quick and easy shifting, almost reminiscent of a formula car. Its close proximity to the steering wheel keeps it handy. It works really, really well and we instantly liked it.  the civic sedan's trunk space is comparable to other compact sedans. The hatchback is very practical with a big cargo compartment that opens up further when the rear seats are folded.  safety equipment includes pre-tensioners for both lap and shoulder belts in front, two-stage front airbags, three-point safety belts for five. driving impressionthe honda civic is a line of cars that offer terrific handling. Ride quality and noise, vibration and harshness are not the best in the class, but the current models feel more substantial, more upscale than pre-2001 models. All civics are fun to drive, and ex and si models increase this aspect with brisk acceleration performance.  driving the civic ex sedan with the five-speed manual transmission is a sporty, satisfying experience. With its more powerful engine, the ex delivers lively acceleration Power Mirrors✔ Tachometer✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ CD Player✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

2007 honda cr-v ex-l review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New and improved for 2007. introductionthe new, 2007 honda cr-v is more powerful, more stylish and more comfortable than the previous-generation 2006 models. The latter comes trimmed in leather and can be fitted with an optional navigation system that incorporates a rearview video camera for safe and easy backing. The transmission is a new, five-speed automatic. Real time all-wheel drive is offered on all three models. Epa rates the front-wheel drive cr-v at 23/30 city/highway miles per gallon and the all-wheel drive at 22/28.  inside, compared with the 2006 cr-v, there's slightly more room in the front seat and slightly less room in the rear seat, except hiproom, which is up by about an inch. There's also marginally more cargo room. Everything by way of instruments, controls and storage is, respectively, logically arrayed, properly placed and reasonably plentiful.  in terms of safety, the new cr-v is fully featured. In addition to the required three-point seatbelts at all five seating positions and front seat airbags, people protection includes front seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear seat side air curtains with roll-over sensors and front seat active head restraints (which work to reduce whiplash in rear impacts). For crash avoidance, antilock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and vehicle stability assist with traction control are all standard.  as for how the '07 cr-v stacks up against the competition, well, in a number of ways, it could do better. The mazda cx-7, which seats five, is more fun to drive and to look at. There's one engine, a 166-horsepower inline-4, and one transmission, a five-speed automatic. Gps-based navigation system with voice recognition and rearview camera 2000) is optional on the ex-l.  honda-approved accessories available from dealers (installation price set by dealers) include wheel locks 54); attachments/racks for bicycle 128), kayak 160), skis 139) and surfboard 75); roof box 299); auto-dim inside mirror with compass 225); amplified bass speaker system 315); and backup sensors 259).  safety features that come standard include the required three-point seatbelts at all five seating positions, front airbags and child safety seat anchors (latch), front seat-mounted side airbags (to minimize upper body injuries in side impacts); roof-mounted, front and rear seat side air curtains (to minimize head injuries in side impacts and rollovers); and front-seat active head restraints (to minimize neck injuries in rear impacts).  for crash avoidance there are antilock brakes (which let the driver steer during panic stops); electronic brake-force distribution (which optimize brake application during emergency stops); brake assist (which senses impending emergency brake application and boosts pedal pressure); vehicle stability assist (honda's electronic stability control system that attempts to minimize skidding in turns); and tire pressure monitors (which warn of dangerous drops in tire pressure). walkaroundboxy is out. Well, maybe not svelte. We're talking suvs, here. And honda, ever the quick learner, has responded with the fully re-styled, 2007 cr-v.  head on, the 2007's low, jutting jaw-like front bumper and skid-plate look pull its visual mass downwards, reducing its perceived height. Large, sharply angled headlight housings crowd the upper grille and bleed down into the lower air intake. Stout fender flares stretch out to wrap tightly around the tires, giving the new cr-v a sturdy, planted stance.  the side aspect shows most clearly the '07's departure from the boxy, mini-suv look. Starting from the gently rounded hood, the relatively fast windshield flows into a roofline that drops ever so slightly as it passes over the sharply tapered glasshouse, ending at the tailgate's top edge, which itself is pulled forward to a point almost directly above the rear wheel well. A strong character line runs from the top of the front wheel well back beneath the full-round door handles to bifurcate the side marker lens of the rear taillight. To us, it looks a little like the mercedes-benz r-class in the overall outline.  the rear view presents more of the classic suv look, with a trapezoidal backlight bookended by the trademark cr-v taillights and atop a fairly tall and relatively broad, high-relief tailgate panel. The oversize license plate recess will accommodate almost any country's registration telltale. A repeat of the front end's skid plate look masks the rear bumper mass and draws the eye to tires pushed out to the edges of the cr-v's side panels. interiorthe interior of the new honda cr-v focuses on function with a bit of style tossed in to make things interesting. Everything is in its place for the most part, and everything feels the way it should. Quality of materials and fit and finish overall live up to honda's standards; some trim pieces, however, showed traces of flash, those little flat bits of plastic left over from the seams of the original molds.  the grippy, waffle-textured, fabric upholstery feels durable. The ex-l's optional leather upholstery is, obviously, richer looking and likely more durable, but no more comfortable. The front seats have slightly taller and marginally wider backs than their '06 counterparts, but are still short on thigh support. To the limited extent the new cr-v lends itself to sporty driving, the seatbacks' side bolsters do an adequate job of keeping occupants' upper bodies in place. Not so the seat bottom's bolsters, those being clearly shaped more for ease of entry and exit than for restraining occupants' posteriors. There is, however, a most welcome dead pedal against which drivers may brace a left leg as necessary and appropriate. Nice touch, as is the replacement of the right-hinged tailgate, which is on the wrong side for curbside unloading at u. Airports, with a top-hinged liftgate.  dashboard and instrument cluster are classic honda, as in, friendly to eye and hand, with the only mildly discordant note the placement of the shift lever, sprouting from a pod suspended from the center of the dash. While neither as ergonomic as a floor-mounted lever nor as natural, in an archaic sort of way, as one mounted on the steering column, it is consistent with the emphasis on flexibility in the front seat area. In the lx and ex, the space between the front seats that might otherwise host a console and floor-mounted shift lever is dedicated to a unique, multi-use tray that when not needed folds down against the side of the passenger seat, opening a walk-through access to the rear seat. To house the six-cd changer that the optional nav system displaces from the dash, the ex-l gets a more traditional, fixed center console, with cup holders and additional storage.  most drivers will find their six-way adjustable seat and two-way adjustable steering give them the best of all worlds: a comfortable posture without compromising outward visibility. A low cowl keeps the edges of the hood in view. Rearward vision, however, sets no new standard and actually suffers some from the awkwardly shaped c-pillars. The rearview video cam that comes with the optional nav system. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Navigation System

2005 honda accord ex-l review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. That's in spite of fierce competition and the introduction of several all-new models for 2005. The accord simply does everything well. All those choices make the accord suitable for many different types of drivers. For these reasons and others, the honda accord continues to be one of the best-selling cars in the u. S.  honda redesigned and re-engineered the accord for 2003. The big news for 2005 is the introduction of the accord hybrid, which achieves excellent fuel economy and generates almost no emissions. Even more impressive, the hybrid delivers improved performance as well, thanks to its hybrid gas-electric powertrain. The popular lx and ex models are terrific cars with comfort and convenience features that make for great daily drivers. Order the leather interior, and the ex becomes an affordable luxury sedan. The accord is also available with a powerful v6 engine, which adds another level of sports appeal.  a gorgeous coupe is available, featuring sporty styling that's unique from the sedan. The lx coupe starts at less than $20,000 and makes for a quick, no-hassle, high-quality, sporty, two-door coupe that's great for commuting. Add the v6 and leather and it's an executive expressmobile for fast trackers. If that isn't enough, a factory performance package is available for the v6 coupe.  safety has been enhanced for 2005: all accords are equipped with side-impact and curtain airbags. Otherwise the accord lineup is relatively unchanged for 2005. lineupthe honda accord comes in nearly three dozen combinations when all the engines, body styles, transmissions and trim levels are taken into account. Choosing one is easier than it may sound. The lx 19,675) and ex 22,100) sedans add a higher level of standard equipment. The ex is available with leather upholstery, a dvd navigation system, and xm satellite radio at extra cost. The lx v-6 23,800) and ex v-6 26,700) sedans come standard with the v6, automatic and more luxury equipment. Leather is standard on the ex v-6.  new for 2005 is the accord hybrid sedan. The hybrid combines a v6 gasoline engine and an electric motor to provide significantly more power: 255 horsepower vs. 240 for the gasoline-only v6. An automatic transmission is available. The lx v-6 coupe 23,900) comes with the v6 and automatic. The ex v-6 coupe 26,800) is a performance-oriented model, and comes with either the five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission as a no-cost option; it also has leather seating surfaces.  six-speed coupes also come with a cross-brace between the front shock towers. The new factory performance package for the ex coupe v6 combines a lowered suspension with an aero body kit and a chrome exhaust extension, all dealer-installed. For automatic models, the package includes the same 17-inch wheels and tires that are standard with the six-speed manual.  safety: anti-lock brakes are standard on all accord models. Ex v6 models come with traction control. As mentioned, side-impact and curtain airbags are standard on all 2005 accords, in addition to the required dual front airbags. walkaroundthe accord is bigger than the pre-2003 models, yet it looks lower, thanks in part to its sleeker, raked-back windshield. The sharpened noses of the accord sedan and coupe are reminiscent of an acura rsx. The corners and sides of both bodies are carefully sculpted with a combination of concave and convex surfaces, in an attempt to achieve a muscular and agile look, with subtle and unique three-dimensional window glass, also intended to reduce wind noise. The aerodynamically efficient side-view mirrors are one of the results of wind tunnel testing. The sedan's drag coefficient (a measure of how easily it moves through the air) is 0. 30, which is quite slippery. The accord hybrid sedan is even more aerodynamic, with a 0. 29 cd, thanks to its rear spoiler and angled antenna.  the accord sedan and coupe share no sheet metal, although their faces do look alike partly because they both have angular headlamps. The coupe is a completely different beast from the sedan, however. Its flanks and rear deck are more shapely, flowing naturally and gracefully from the roofline. It yields a very aerodynamic 0. 29 drag coefficient.  the accord's doors are built using a unique method that makes them light and strong. Additionally, the coupe earned a five-star rating for front- and rear-seat passengers in the side-impact test, even without the optional side-impact airbags.  all accord coupes and the majority of sedans are assembled in honda's marysville, ohio, plant, though some of the sedans come from japan and mexico. interiorthe honda accord's interior is smooth, firm, and quiet. For starters, it comes with great seats.  the seats in the sedan are generously wide and tall, with springs and urethane padding designed to reduce vibration. The driver's seat provides a one-with-the-car feel with good side support. It features a manual height adjustment or power adjustments on premium models. Front legroom is generous. A tilt-and-telescope steering wheel comes standard.  the seats in the coupe seem a bit different and feel even better than those in the sedan. The side bolsters are more aggressive providing a more secure fit at the torso. The cloth looked classier in black; the light-colored cloth looked like it would show dirt over time. The leather is nicer than the cloth.  the sedan's bench seat is roomy and comfortable, especially for two people with the center armrest flipped out. The accord's trunk measures 14 cubic feet (though only 11. 2 for the hybrid version because of its extra computer and battery pack), compared with the camry's nearly 17 cubic feet and the altima's 15. 6. The coupe's trunk is slightly smaller than the sedan's, holding less than 13 cubic feet.  the instrumentation is excellent, comprising large, clear analog faces with led illumination, the latter a feature associated with higher-priced luxury cars. A big speedometer in the center dominates the instrument panel. The switchgear, primarily three big dials located in the center of the dash, is simple, if not particularly attractive. And automatic dual-zone climate control is available on ex models.  honda's interior fit and finish is good. The available bird's-eye wood grain plastic trim looked interesting, the faux carbon fiber trim looked nice, and the brushed aluminum trim wasn't bad either.  interior space is used efficiently, with the audio, climate and optional navigation system controls integrated into a single unit. This frees up space for exceptional cabin storage, including a good-sized glovebox, a big center console, a bin under the audio system that will hold 12 cds, and door pockets deep and wide enough for a purse.  attention to detail shows in every corner: coinholders, cellphone cord hooks, grab handles over every door, console lights, power outlets, sunglasses holders, sliding armrests for different-sized arms, convenient and versatile access to the trunk from the rear seat. Up to eight cupholders are provided; a couple of them are big enough to hold a liter-sized water bottle yet feature spring-loaded prongs that can grip a paper coffee cup.
